Costume Wear & Care

You are here: Home / Current Families / Costume Wear & Care

Throughout the spring of 2019, dancers participating in recital will receive their costumes! In an effort to keep costumes crisp and clean for recital we ask that dancers only wear their costume for Picture Day and Recital day. Remind your dancers that costumes are not for playtime. You will receive costumes in a garment bag with your child’s name on the outside. Keep extra costume pieces such as armbands and hair accessories in the clear plastic bag labeled with child’s name provided at costume distribution. Hats should be stored in a hat box or similar container to prevent damage. Be sure to hang any tutus or skirts.
Please do not wash costumes in your washing machine; costumes may be dry cleaned after the recital.

TO GET OUT WRINKLES: Spritz nylon skirts with a mist of water. Once water is lightly applied, shake the garment until wrinkles are out. Garments may also be steamed. *Do not iron anything!

ALTERATIONS

Although rare, if alterations are needed after the costumes have been distributed, they will be the sole responsibility of the student’s parent or guardian.

WITHDRAWAL

No refunds will be made if a parent or guardian withdraws a child from the school after costumes have been ordered and prior to the recital. Parent or guardians may pick up purchased costumes at the school at the time of general costume distribution and up to 15 days after the performance. Costumes not picked up after 15 days will be donated to charity or resold.

TIGHTS

Parents are responsible for the purchase and maintenance of your dancer’s tights. Tights worn for recital should not be worn during class, but are exclusively for performances, as they may run or be dirtied.

  • Jazz : Tan Footed Tights
  • Hip-Hop: Tan Footed Tights
  • Ballet, Creative Movement, and Pre-Ballet: Pink Footed Tights
  • Contemporary: Please confirm tights selection with your instructor
  • Tap: Tan Footed Tights
SHOES

The following shoes are required for all students.

  • Jazz: Tan Boot Jazz Shoes
  • Hip-Hop: Tan Boot Jazz Shoes
  • Ballet, Creative Movement, and Pre-Ballet: Pink Ballet Shoes
  • Contemporary: Bare Feet or Turners (please confirm with your instructor)
  • Tap: Tan buckle tap shoes
MAKE-UP

We strongly encourage dancers to wear make-up onstage. The lights are bright and they tend to wash out a dancer’s face. During pictures, a little bit of blush and a little color on the lips makes a big difference. Make up is however, optional. We respect and honor a parent’s decision to refrain from using stage make up.

Dancers should prepare their hair and make-up at home. We ask that dancers do not bring make up to the Spring Performance. Our backstage volunteers will help dancers with make-up touch ups. If you choose not to have your dancer wear make-up onstage, he/she should say “I’m beautiful the way I am,” to the backstage volunteers.

Girls Make-Up: L’Oreal True Red Lipstick/Lip Gloss, Pink Blush, Brown Eye Shadow
Progressive Program dancers must also wear mascara and eyeliner
Boys Make-Up: Foundation, brown eyeliner

HAIR

All costume hairpieces will go on the right side of the head/bun

  • Ballet/Lyrical- Bun at the crown of the head
  • Jazz/Hip Hop – High ponytail
  • Tap – High ponytail
